TIME FOR CHANGE

Hello Lovely Ladies,

Well it has been 7 months since the pink door closed and yes I do miss the boutique and my lovely customers but I honestly believe the change has been a good thing for me.

Soooo with this in mind, I think it's time for a new blog. I would like to start the new year with a blog about me, my life, friends and family, my little house which I'm happily in planning mode for renovations, cooking, gardening, sewing and so much more. I want 2010 to be a year of exploration on discovering who I am, what I love and accepting all these things.

I hope you will come back and join me. I will keep you posted.

Until 2010, I would like to wish you all a wonderful Christmas with your family and friends. May 2010 be a year of peace!

I'M STILL HERE... I PROMISE

Hello Lovely Ladies,

I know it has been ages since I wrote a post - can you believe it has been over a month now since I closed the pink door at the boutique.

There is still lots going on there, as I try and find a new tenant to take-over the lease, sell all of the shop fittings and finish packing everything up. I'm keeping my fingers crossed as we speak (it's making typing very hard :-P ) I may have found a new tenant and we're currently going through the whole legal thing which is a heap of fun!!!

I'm now working in the City (Brisbane) which sees me up bright and early to catch the train. I am really enjoying the change of scenery and discovered a farmers market every Wednesday which is full of yummy things.

I promise to get back into my posts once things settle down, oh and I need get my computer all set up. I'm still reading my favourite blogs and I'll be back soon. Until then, take care lovely ladies.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO A BEAUTIFUL NIECE

My beautiful niece, Tayla, turns 10 today!!!

It's such an exciting time in a young girls life. To venture into the double digits, it's the beginning.... so to honour this time I wanted to do something extra special for her so after a lot of thought I decided to make here a print for her new bedroom. It's a collage of everything she is and all the things she loves, centered around her name.

PART 2: TALENTS

Like I mentioned in yesterdays post, we tend to only focus on the things we can't do. Here I want to try and list the things I'm good at - it's hard being this upfront

Organised
Planning
Procedures - love to set up and following but not be restricted by them (if that makes sense)
Learn computer programs pretty quickly (taught myself how to build the website using coding)
Colour coordinating
Sew
Design - graphic design
Buying for the boutique (I enjoyed planning each season and coordinating pieces across a variety of labels/brands)
Accounts - yes I'm one of those people that actually enjoy the books (personally and for the business)

Basically, I loved every aspect of the business, from the buying, financials, merchandising, website, marketing, etc. I enjoyed the variety but also the day-to-day tasks.

So what next....?? What am I looking for in a job/career/work environmant and what I don't want.

I'M HOOKED

I might be a bit slow in picking up the Twlight series to read but let me tell you, now that I have I can't put them down. Sitting right beside me is the 4th book 'Breaking Dawn' and I'm trying very hard to take my time reading it because I know it's coming to an end. I think I read the others in less than a week - it really does pull you into their world!

PART 1: INTEREST - THEMES

I took a good look at my 'Interest' list last night to see if there were any common themes and I did see something but before I say anything I want to take the next step... later today I'll sit down and write a list of what I'm good at. It's funny how we tend to focus on the negative or what we can't do, when we really should focus on the positive and the things that we are good at. That's the plan for today, make a list of my talents, what I'm good at.

OK LET THE JOURNEY BEGIN

After my post yesterday I decided I need to get straight into it today so I've grabbed a notepad and pen ready to get started.

First things first... today I'll start with making a list of the things that interest me - I plan to write down as many things as my mind comes up with. I might even take a cup of tea and sit outside the boutique and soak up the sun.

This list will obviously be scribbles to start with but I plan to then break the list into different categories and see if there is a common theme.

I'll post my list later on today. I don't want to hold back, I want to open myself up completely here to see what I find - this is a little scary for me because I don't normally share this side of my life with many people but I feel that I need to do this right now, it's time for a change and who knows I might just find what I've been searching for.

OK, lets start.

TIME FOR A CHANGE

As you know I'm in the process of closing down Gloss Boutique, well the physical bricks and mortar store anyway (unfortunately my landlord wont let me out of the lease so instead I need to find a new tenant for the shop before I can move on).

I visited the Stitches and Craft show on Sunday in Brisbane and it go me thinking.... I really need to use this time more wisely to plan my next step. I think I need to go back to the beginning and work out what it is I want to do, what I want in a job and it's environment, the type of people I want to work with or maybe by myself (though I would miss that creative environment) and see what it is I really want to do.

I need to get brutally honest with myself here and discover just what it is I'm passionate about.

With that, I plan on using this blog as a kind of diary to jot down my thoughts and hopefully a plan will unfold. I hope you don't mind me taking you along with me? I would love to hear your thoughts on this. Have you taken the journey yourself? Did you find what you were looking for?

COLOUR FUN

This was a lot of fun!

I stumbled across a website called COLOURlovers that basically allows you to play with colour and patterns using templates to create your own prints and colour charts. There is a lot more on the site including forums, etc but I found myself playing around with this pattern and completely lost track of time. It's funny how quickly time passes when you find a new toy to play with.

I think this print would look great in other combinations like orange - will have to head back and play some more :-P

Be warned, it can become addictive, I should know!!

SOULFUL VOICE

I saw Duffy on the Australian 'So You Think You Can Dance' show a couple of weeks ago - now I had heard the name mentioned over the radio and even heard parts of her songs but I hadn't heard a song all the way through or even seen one of her video clip so I took myself over to her website to check her out.

WOW! Her voice is amazing. It's soulful, I love it!! I'll be heading out to buy her CD (yes, I still prefer to have the actual CD in my hands).

ANZAC BISCUIT

With Anzac Day tomorrow I HAD to make a batch of ANZAC biscuits.

I did forget to take a photo so I searched Flickr for a photo that looked like the ones I made. This photo is from tristanf Flickr photostream.

Actually, because I made these as I was making dinner, they went perfectly with coffee/tea. They are at their best when they first come out of the oven.

There is much debate though on if they should be hard or soft. I prefer mine to be a little crunchy on the outside and soft in the middle. My family all have their preferences so I had to put a small batch back in the oven to crunch up a little more (note to self: make the crunchy batch a lot thinner so they will be nice and crunchy).

I have been doing a bit of reading the last couple of days on the environment and looking at ways I can help, no matter how small. Things like the amount of electricity I use at home and at work. I do turn appliances off at the wall - those that I can reach anyway (OK, I just got up and turned off the air con in the shop, it's not really that warm in here today), I try to recycle as much as possible, buy direct from the growers for fruit and vegetables, walk to work, just to name a few.

My sister is even doing her bit. She's currently designing her new home and is looking at ways to utilise the 5 acres and be more self sufficient.

I regularly visit the Martha Stewart website and I came across the article 'Just Do One Thing'.

Now I know there are lots and lots of articles and websites dedicated to this issue so if you have a favourite please add it in the comments to share - I'd be really interested to read more.

CELEBRATION FOR MUM

My mum is celebrating her birthday next month so the party planning has begun.

Mum and Dad took a trip to Vietnam last year and had a fabulous time so with that trip in mind it has been decided that the party will have an Asian theme, it's perfect!

I've been going through various cookbooks tagging lots of pages with various recipes for Mum to approve or not.... Mum isn't a big fan of cakes so we'll need to give the birthday cake situation some serious thought. Dad had his birthday last December and because he's not a cake person either he chose one of his favourite desserts, profiteroles with custard and toffee sauce. It took me a while to search the internet for a recipe but I finally found one. They looked great served on two 3-tier cake stands (I'll see if I can find a photo for you) and I'm happy to say they were a big hit! The recipe now sits in my Kikki-k Recipe Folder.

To help with the planning I'm working on a vision board with various pictures to suit the theme. It's not finished yet but you get the idea of what we're thinking.

I wanted to do a Mosiac on Autumn because of all the wonderful colours and yes technically it is Autumn here in Australia but in Queensland we are still experiencing warm weather. We don't tend to get cold until late April/early May. The weather is changing though, you can feel the difference in the air, particularly at night but just this week we had cold, raining days followed by a blue sky with 30 degrees temps. Strange but very true.

WHAT TO DO...

Do you have those days when you wake up and knowing that you have the whole day free, you just can't think of anything to do and with us all trying to tighten our purse strings just a little bit, it seems to be harder to think of something.

So I've been thinking.... what I'd like to do is create a list of things to do that are free which I'll post on the blog. Now, it can be anything at all but the only thing I ask of you is that is has to be a cheap as possible.

This is going to be interesting to see what we all come up with.

I'll start with a couple of ideas that I've done recently:

Window Shopping. Now I know this is fairly simple but I recently went window shopping with a friend to Paddington in Brisbane and had a lovely day. We parked the car at the top end and visited one of the largest antique stores I've ever seen, I could have stayed and wondered around for hours but we had lots more shops to visit. We slowly made our way down the street stopping in at so many gorgeous boutiques. We eventually took a little break for a bite to eat and a very yummy hot chocolate, mine had hazelnut syrup and my friend had a Mocha with Chilli - she loved it. I'm sorry but I can't remember the name of the cafe so if you do, please let me know.

Walk. This particularly walk is great and gives you fantastic views of Brisbane. Start at the South Bank Parklands and head across the footbridge and into the City Botanical Gardens. Then along the Riverside Promenade and duck up onto Adelaide Street to make your way across the Story Bridge. Once across turn right and head down along the water which will take you back to South Bank. It really is a lovely way to spend a day and see parts of the city you may not normally see.

FOR KIDS BIG & SMALL

Just around the corner from the boutique is a convenience store that has a slushie machine and you can be guaranteed when my lovely niece visits she will have a cola slushie. Who can blame her really, I love them too!

I was reading the Craft blog this morning which had a link to a homemade slushie recipe on the Mom Advice blog. I think I'm going to have to try this one out

CAKE DELIGHT

You might remember last week I showed you a photo of the layered cake I made my sister for her birthday (see here). Well, her husband celebrated his birthday exactly 7 days later and we couldn't let it pass without another yummy cake. This time around I went for a Chocolate Souffle Cake. I even painted leaves with chocolate to decorate the top (wow it didn't take them long to melt). The cake was more deadly than a mud cake (his favourite).

THE NOTEBOOK

I finally got around to seeing The Notebook over the weekend. I know it has taken me a while, OK it took me years to finally see it and I'm glad I did.

Actually, it wasn't planned. I was shopping for Easter eggs on Saturday and decided to take a wonder over to the books and see if anything took my fancy. No, nothing jumped out at me so I headed over to the DVD section and I straight away I noticed The Notebook sitting there on the shelf so I had to take it home.

The story was beautiful, the scenery and the wardrobe was just stunning. I particularly loved Allie's swimsuit with the floral headband. If you haven't seen the movie, I highly recommend it. xx

YUMMY

A couple of weeks ago I spent an entire day in the kitchen making my lovely sister a 3-course birthday dinner to celebrate.

It was a fun day - you know those cooking days when everything comes together nicely (you know those days I'm talking about I'm sure).

I started with a family favourite for the entree with a Tomato & Mushroom Soup with Prawns and Ravioli followed by Veal Parmasagna for the main. This was all very nice but I have to say the dessert was the highlight for me. I found a recipe for a cake on the scrumptious Bakerella blog but this was no ordinary cake. It had 14 layers!!! Yes, you did read correctly. My layers were a little thicker than the recipe so I ended up going with only 9 layers but let me tell you the cake stood about 18cm high.

Yummmmmmmy!!

FESTIVAL TIME

4 DAYS HOLIDAY!!! Yep, we have a 4 day weekend this week, thanks to Easter. If you're in Brisbane can I recommend you visit the festival down at Suttons Beach. It is a fantastic day for everyone!

It's a great way to start the extra long weekend and watch the sail boats as they start the Brisbane to Gladstone Yatch Race from the bay.

THIS WEEKEND

The weather here in sunny Queensland has been anything but, but we aren't complaining here. It's funny how our attitudes can change, just a few years ago we would complain if it rained but after the drought in recent years and we all started to pay attention to the amount of water we used - did you put a bucket in your shower? I did.

So what to do on a lovely wet Sunday....?

I think I'll take myself to the city and visit the Art Gallery and Museum. Both have been on my 'To Do' list but just one of those things you never get around to doing.

That's right, I almost forgot that I started a list of '36 things to do while I'm 36'. I'll have to check the list and see if there is anything else I can tick.

I wanted to thank everyone (via the blog or who have popped in) for all of your very kind words since I announced the pink door was closing. It has been lovely to hear how much you have enjoyed the boutique and how much you have loved the pieces I have chosen of the years, it's so nice to hear xxoo.

As I've mentioned before the website isn't going anywhere and I do intend on keeping the blog going as well... I've been jotting down a few new ideas lately that you may be interested in... I can't say too much now so don't go away....

DOING OUR BIT

Are you participating in Earth Hour this Saturday night?

It's an international event where you turn off the lights at your place at 8:30pm Saturday, 28th March 2009 for 1 hour (your local time).

The Brisbane City Council is participating by turning off lights at The Story Bridge, William Jolly and Victoria Bridge, City Hall, Brisbane Square, Green Square, Major depots, Council libraries and Contact Centres, Brisbane Powerhouse, Planetarium and Naval Stores.

It's a fantastic idea to get everyone involved and doing our bit for the enviornment. So this Saturday night lets ALL turn our lights out.

I think it's a good excuse to get together with friends and family for dinner, picnic or a bbq over a candle light.

OH WOH IS ME

This morning in the wee early hours, before the sun was even trying to break thru the timber blinds, I found myself wide awake with a very sore throat. I felt perfectly fine last night before going to be but this morning was a completely different story. I don't get sick with bugs or the flu very often, I do however have hayfever attacks but this isn't one of those. I have the sore throat and then throughout the day it has gone to my head and nose and I'm not that hungry which is when I know I'm sick! I think I might take my sick littleself home a little bit early today (I'll say sorry know if stop by the boutique this afternoon to find it closed) and have an early night, try to nip this little bug before it takes hold.

OK, I'LL EXPLAIN...

You have probably noticed I've been a little slack with my blog this week, well I'm going through a transition at the moment. I have just announced that I am closing the boutique. This is HUGE for me, as you can imagine.

Until the pink door closes (I don't have a date just yet) I'm having a HUGE storewide sale which you can visit at the Gloss Boutique website.

I am happy to say that I will be keeping the website and blog going as I'm really enjoying it and I love my morning ritual of reading many blogs from all around the world - there are just sooooo many talented people out there.

It's now 4:30 on a Friday afternoon and as you all head into your weekend (my weekend begins on Sunday) and it's a dreary day here in the usually sunny Queensland, I thought I would share these photos I discovered today on a website by Twig Hutchinson, they are gorgous!

Wallpaper for the shoe lover - yes, that's wallpaper. What a fantastic idea!!

I just had to show you this wallpaper. Called 'Svärmor' it's designed by Swedish designer Lisa Bengtsson. If you saw 'Better Homes and Gardens' on Friday night you would have seen another of Lisa's designs called 'Familjen'.

I love this idea. The wallpaper allows you to stick photos within the each frame. A great place to stick up your kids drawings.

Just like Nicole (sis) bought me the Kikki-K Recipe folder for Christmas, I bought her the Kikki-K My Dream Home folder. It's designed to keep all of your ideas in one place.

This folder is getting a good work out at the moment, as Nicole and her husband have bought acerage and will be building their dream home soon. I've recently put on the 'big sister' hat and have been helping her with design and decorating ideas. We've been searching the internet and happily ripping pages from various magazines so you might just see some of my finds along the way.

MOVIE REVIEW

Oops, I forgot to tell you that I went and saw the movie 'He's Just Not That Into You' on the opening weekend and LOVED IT!!

The movie has an all-star cast including Ben Affleck, Jennifer Aniston, Drew Barrymore, Jennifer Connelly, Kevin Connolly, Bradley Cooper, Ginnifer Goodwin, Scarlett Johansson, Kris Kristofferson and Justin Long. The story line basically involves a group of people who are interconnected as they navigate their various relationships. You have those that are our in the dating world and those swimming in married life.

This will be one movie I'll be adding to my DVD collection.

Before I get to the important aspect of the awards... the red carpet, I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed the Oscars this year. I usually flick channels during because it is soooo long and usually soooo boring but I have to say I was surprised this year. I enjoyed it!

I particular liked the personal touch of having past winners speak directly to the nominee about their performance. Didn't Hugh do a fantastic job. He brought a lightness to it. Is there anything this man can't do?

Tonights the night. Yes, the 81st Annual Accadamy Awards are on this week in the US.

I love an awards night, I particular love the red carpet. The glamour of the event, those dresses are exquisite and the jewellery, oh my!!

This year is extra special for us Aussies with our favourite boy Hugh Jackman presenting.

I'm not what you would call a 'label girl'. I don't buy clothes or bags simply because of the status a label is suppose to bring.

However, having said that, there is one label I simply adore but for me it's more about the person behind the label than the label itself. That is Chanel.

If you haven't heard they are making a new movie 'Coco Avant Chanel' about the first years of Gabrielle Chanel in the fashion world with Audrey Tautou to play Coco. It is scheduled for release in the US this year but there is no word yet on a release date here in Australia.

RECIPE FOLDER

We all know how much I love Kikki-K and for Christmas my lovely sister, Nicole, got me a recipe folder so I could organise the many recipes I have on pieces of paper. I tend to type up my recipes or print them off the web.

The folder is made of plastic which is great for easy cleaning. It came with these section tabs (Meat, Vegetables, Pasta, etc) and plastic sleeves which of course I need more.

I find being organised rather satisfying knowing I can find things when I need them. Like I did earlier this week when I wanted the recipe for Pumpkin Risotto with Verjuice (mmm, very yummy!).

A few websites I regularly visit include The Cook and the Chef (ABC), Nigella Lawson, Ninesmn Recipes - this one is particularly good because it has a database from various publications, MattBites plus many more.

I love trying new recipes so if you have one please let me know.

NEW DESIGNS

As you know I've been working with felt lately and I'm happy to say I've been getting some wonderful feedback and they've been selling well in the boutique. I started with the small daisy flowers (which you would have seen in a recent blog) I've also made some larger flowers and some in the shape of icecream cones, they even have sprinkles. I promise to post some photos soon, I have to borrow a camera.

I'm currently working on a couple of new designs for the felt hairclips. I might even make some brooches as well, so you can clip them to your clothes. I'll keep you posted. xx

TEA TIME

After being a big coffee drinker most of my life, I was even a barista for a short time, a couple of years ago I started drinking tea. It was strange because I always drank a skinny latte with 2 sugars and then one day I started drinking black tea with 1 sugar.

Ever since then I have found myself fascinated with teacups, the different sizes, styles, colours and the range of prints and designs. I have put together a mosaic of a small selection of gorgeous teacups.

Last year I came across a website called autochic. It's all about cars but this is no meat-head website. It's for women. They have plenty of information on selling or buying a car, cars that are green for the environment, child safety and soooo much more.

I particular like the way they review a new car because as you know, we look at cars differently to men. We want to know where our handbag will go, will the kids be comfortable, safety, etc.

CRAFT BUG

Last year I started to get the craft bug... at first I wasn't sure what I wanted to make so I started researching different ideas. This can be dangerous for me because my mind fills with so many ideas that I just dodn't know where to start.

I was particulary interested in small projects that I could do here at the boutique and at home.

I have always had a thing for felt, particularly when it's embroidered on a tee (you may have noticed that I usually have at least one tee in the Summer range, just like the Purr College Tee).

My first project was the Felt Flower Hairclips. They are a lot of fun to make and I'm happy to say they have been a big hit in the boutique. I started with red but have since added yellow, blue, green, purple and pink.

AUSTRALIA DAY!

Honestly, we couldn't live in a better place. I feel very lucky to live in Australia today. We have so many opportunities available to us, though I know at times it doesn't feel that way but if you stop and think of other countries around the world, then yes we are very lucky.

I think when you travel the world and then return home you really appreciate the lifestyle we have here. It has been several years since I went overseas but I still remember the feeling I had when I walked out of the Brisbane International Airport and saw that great big blue sky.

However you decide to celebrate Australia Day I hope you have a wonderful day!

CHINESE NEW YEAR

This weekend brings Chinese New Year and I'm heading into Chinatown with friends to celebrate!

We have been going in for a few years now and always have a great time. We have learn't to book early and ask for a table outside on the mall, here we can watch the festivities and people watch (I love doing this) while we eat lots of fabulous food (psst, remember to wear something comfy to allow for lots of eating).

36 THINGS TO DO WHILE I'M 36

Do you remember me telling you about my list of '36 things to do while I'm 36'? Well, I'm very happy to say that I've made a start on my list and I've even been able to cross a few things off the list, including:

Visiting the cheese shop up at Montville - I looove cheese.
Make a beanie. I know it's sounds insane, considering it's the middle of the Queensland Summer and the humidity is in the 90's but I have always wanted to knit something and finish it (that's the whole point). I've finished the knitting part, woohooo, and I just need to stitch it up and make a couple of pompoms for the top (this beanie will be going to my beautiful niece, Tayla).
Start an inspiration board filled with things I love from fabric, photos, cards, pages torn from magazines, this is a work in progress.
Read a classic novel. I've just borrowed the Jane Austen novel 'Emma' from the local Library.
Try a new cafe/restaurant every month. I recently met a friend for coffee and a cupcake at a sweet little cafe called Sweetopia (Grey St, South Brisbane).

So not a bad start to week 4 of the year. I'll keep you posted :-)

DISAPPOINTED...

We are very disappointed is say that the 'Opening of the Woody Point Jetty and Foreshore Renewal Project' has been cancelled today due to bad weather.

It sure gets windy here on the point but I guess that's bound to happen when we have water on 3 sides.

The council have advised that they will let us know if they will reschedule.

So for now.... the jetty and foreshore are OPEN and the flying fox is back!
